Rep. Ownbey Denounces Monument Ruling

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma Supreme Court is clearly trying to legislate from the bench in today’s 7-2 decision against the Ten Commandments monument, according to an Ardmore lawmaker.

State Rep. Pat Ownbey said Oklahomans are going to have to decide whether or not they will stand for the judicial activism of the Oklahoma Supreme Court.

“I have a feeling that we may see a justice recalled in the next election,” said Ownbey, R-Ardmore. “The Oklahoma Supreme Court is going against a number of state and national court precedents upholding the use of Ten Commandment monuments as historic displays. I think most people are aware of those precedents and that tradition and will vote to recall the justices.”

Ownbey said the justices appear to completely ignore the precedents set forth in previous cases.

“Their opinion doesn’t touch on the history of these cases,” Ownbey said. “They simply make a sweeping change with little legal support for their decision.”
